As the nights draw in, and the sun starts to set, draw back the curtains and see if your children can spot the creatures that come out at night. This Autumn we're loving bats and you can see them in action. And – in case you didn’t know, bats:

  • Bob up and down rather than swoop like birds. They love ponds, fields and golf courses!
  • Are the only mammals that can fly. Their skin is spread among five long bony fingers – sort of like a big hand.
  • Have knees that face backward so they can hang upside down (don't try at home!)
  • Sometimes have flaps of skin attached to their tail so they can scoop up insects as they're flying, and fling them into their mouth...
  • Have one baby at a time, and tuck it under their wing until it can learn to fly...
  • Aren't blind, but they do use their ears and mouth to locate where they are. They make a sound that echoes (so they can locate trees and buildings) and use their powerful sense of smell to locate food.
